The Atlanta area has long been occupied before any European contact in the region. The Atlanta area and larger Georgia region was occupied for many centuries by what are known as the moundbuilding societies, so called for the large earthen mounds that they constructed. The mounds were known to be used for residential, ceremonial, and burial purposes. The first European contact in the region occured around 1540, when Spanish explorers entered the area. Augusta, Georgia

The city of Augusta was founded in 1735 as a defensive encampment designed to fend off Spanish and French incursions. Augusta is strategically located at the head of the Savannah River, making it a key point along the river defensively. The town remained a primarily defensive encampment until 1739 when a road was constructed that linked Augusta with the larger colony at Savannah.
