History of Atlanta

The Atlanta area has long been occupied before any European contact in the region. The Atlanta area and larger Georgia region was occupied for many centuries by what are known as the moundbuilding societies, so called for the large earthen mounds that they constructed. The mounds were known to be used for residential, ceremonial, and burial purposes.
The first European contact in the region occured around 1540, when Spanish explorers entered the area. Despite peace in the area, the moundbuilding societies disappeared shortly after the first European contact.

Stricken with European diseases such as smallpox, the native people soon suffered great epidemics. Within a span of less than twenty years, the moundbuilding societies had disappeared. The first major European settlement in the region was to be in Savannah, with colonization of the Atlanta area coming much later. Atlanta, in fact, was built to serve one of the first rail lines coming through the area in 1836. The Western and Atlantic Railroad connected the South with the Midwestern United States. The new city grew quickly, reaching over 7,000 residents by 1860.

Atlanta was burned to the ground in 1864 by Union soldiers during the Civil War. New growth came slowly, as it did for the rest of the troubled state. World War II brought real revitalization to the city, with the creation of thousands of heavy industry jobs. The new industrial presence would remain after the war, fueling the growth of the city in the twentieth century.

The city became a central focus of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. Massive sit-ins and other protest actions shook Atlanta, with Dr. Martin Luther King leading the efforts. The disruptions led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Since the 1960s, Atlanta has become a rapidly growing city. In fact, the city has one of the highest growth rates in the world, and struggles every year to accomodate new residents. Asian and Latino immigrants comprise a large part of the new residents, with the black population falling to 54% of the total population.

In 1996 the city hosted the Summer Olympics, vaulting Atlanta to the international stage. The Olympics resulted in massive improvements to the infrastructure of the city, with city parks and sports facilities receiving major upgrades.
